Doublet Management Consulting Ltd.

Build a business that sells for more, to more buyers, on your timeline.

I help owner-operators of $2M to $10M trades, manufacturing, distribution and industrial services companies grow revenue, raise profits and get their evenings and weekends back, while building a business that sells for more.

Maximize the value of your business

I work with owner-operators to build businesses that earn more, need less of the owner’s time, and are worth more when they sell. That usually means fixing the things buyers discount, the issues that quietly take money off the table long before anyone signs a letter of intent.

I focus on trades, manufacturing, distribution and industrial services companies between $2M and $10M in revenue, usually with one to three owners. That is where I have operated, and it is where the same handful of value drivers keep showing up.

  • What buyers discount
  • The business depends on the owner, so a buyer worries it walks out the door when you do.
  • A few customers make up too much of the revenue, which reads as risk.
  • Recurring revenue is thin, so every year starts from zero.
  • The financials do not hold up under diligence, and the price drops late in the process.

Most owners come to me two or three years before they plan to sell. That is the window where the work actually changes the number.

How I help

There are three ways to work together, depending on where you are.

1

Find the gaps

A ValueBuilder assessment scores your business on the eight drivers buyers pay for and shows you exactly where the gaps are.

2

Close the gaps

A value growth engagement works through those gaps over twelve to thirty-six months, so the business gets stronger whether you sell or not.

3

Get to close

When you are ready to transact, I sit on your side of the table through diligence and close.

Some owners also use me as a fractional COO while the work is underway.

Objective advice, tailored to your situation

You work directly with me. I guide you through the sale process, from readiness through diligence to close, so you come out the other side with the outcome you and your family were counting on.

A business that runs like a well-oiled machine

We build the systems, processes and management depth that let your team carry more of the load, so you work fewer hours and the business keeps growing. You get your time back now, and the option to sell whenever you choose, at a price that reflects what you actually built.

Who you will work with

I am Phil Doublet, P.Eng., Principal of Doublet Management Consulting Ltd., which I founded in 2000. I have spent 25 years as a founder, operator, CEO, COO and director with direct P&L responsibility, so I have run the kind of businesses I now advise.

I grew a metal fabrication company from $1.5M to $4.5M over eleven years and exited. I built Chronologic Systems from zero to roughly $4M in revenue and 25 staff, then merged it with Net Shepherd, a public company, where I served as EVP and COO of the combined company through a scale-up from 25 to more than 120 people across three US subsidiaries.

I am a Certified ValueBuilder Advisor, and I have served on more than fifteen public, private and not-for-profit boards.

Giving back: Camp Shawnigan

I sit on the board of Easter Seals BC & Yukon and chair the $25 million capital campaign to rebuild Camp Shawnigan on Vancouver Island, which will be North America’s first year-round, purpose-built, multifunctional space for children, youth and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. Learn about the campaign at campshawnigan.ca.

Frequently asked questions

What makes your approach different?

I have run the businesses I advise on. I grew a metal fabrication company from $1.5M to $4.5M, and built Chronologic Systems to roughly $4M before merging it with Net Shepherd and serving as EVP and COO. I am a P.Eng. and a Certified ValueBuilder Advisor, and I have served on more than fifteen boards.

How do you actually help?

Three ways, depending on where you are. A ValueBuilder assessment scores your business on the eight drivers buyers pay for. A value growth engagement works those gaps over twelve to thirty-six months. And when you are ready to transact, I sit on your side of the table through diligence and close.

When should I start preparing to sell my business?

Ideally two or three years before you plan to sell. That gives enough time to reduce owner dependence, spread out customer concentration, build recurring revenue and clean up the financials, which are the things that actually move the price. Starting later still helps, but there is less you can change.

Do I have to be planning to sell?

No. The same work that makes a business sellable also makes it more profitable and less demanding of your time. You get your time back now, and keep the option to sell whenever you choose.

What do buyers pay more for?

Buyers pay for lower risk and predictable cash flow. The Value Builder System measures eight drivers, including financial performance, growth potential, recurring revenue, customer satisfaction and how the business performs when you step away for a while. Its published data shows businesses scoring 80 or higher receive offers 71% higher than average.

What size and type of business do you work with?

Owner-operated trades, manufacturing, distribution and industrial services companies with roughly $2M to $10M in revenue and one to three owners. My clients are on Vancouver Island, the BC mainland, in Alberta and across the Pacific Northwest.

What is a fractional COO?

A fractional COO is an experienced operations executive who works part time inside your business. You get senior leadership on systems, people and execution without the cost of a full-time hire, which is often the fastest way to free up the owner’s time.
